However, The Monarch 5 is sufficient for its price and offers a wide range of features. Nikon has been in the binocular game for a long time and they know what they are doing. Read our full review of the Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 below or check out our full list of the best cheap binoculars here.

Technical specifications

nikon monarch 5 8x42 reviewThe Monarch 5 has quite a few nice features for its price. Here are the ones that we found to be the most important:

This binocular comes with 8x zoom capability and 42mm lenses. As far as zoom goes, 8x is not the most popular option out there. Depending on what you are planning to do, 10x might be a better suit for you. Hunters generally prefer more zoom and birdwatchers prefer a larger field of view. This binocular would rather suit the latter.

The 42mm lenses are multicoated so they don’t have glare issues and provide a clearer image. The glasses are built with Nikon’s premium ED technology. This means that the glass has extra-low dispersion. The 42mm lenses for great in low-light situations. As wildlife is more active in dim light, this is an important factor.

The Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 is also light. Weighing in an ounce lighter than previous versions, the total weight is 1.3lbs. Outdoor activities are straining enough as it is so less weight is always better. We prefer carrying an extra beer rather than dead weight!

The lenses are multicoated. This is the standard for binoculars in this price range. Multicoating helps to battle the effects of glare and provide a clearer picture.

The Monarch 5 is also waterproof and fog proof. These are perfect features if you are looking to go out in harsh conditions. The body is covered by a rubber casing which protects it from fall damage and scratches.

How good are the binoculars?

While writing this Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 review, we decided to take the binoculars for a little hunting trip. It was a rainy day – it always has to be, doesn’t it? Anyway, the binoculars worked perfectly. We didn’t have any issues with fog or rain. The rubber eyecups offered nice protection for our eyes as well.

Light transmission was decent. It was quite dark that day because of the rain so this might not be fair to the product. We didn’t see the best results but considering the conditions it did pretty well.

nikon monarch 5 8x42 review

The prisms offered great color reproduction and the image was crisp and clear. No issues with manufacturing quality were noticed. Also, we didn’t notice any game…again.

Customer feedback

The Monarch 5 seems to be well accepted by the buyers. With 79% 5 star feedback on Amazon, it is among the best reviewed binoculars in its price range. Highlights are its light weight, great color reproduction and the comfortable eyecups. Most customers find these to be the best features and the overall tone is positive.

On the negative side, a considerable amount of customers is having trouble with the lens covers. On our unit they fitted just fine but customers are reporting that the covers don’t fit properly. This might cause them to fall off in active situations.

Wrapping up the Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 review

The Nikon Monarch 5 8×42 performs well in the low-mid price range. We found that it has great colors, a sharp image and is comfortable to use. It is best suited for beginners so if you are looking for something more serious, take a look at our list of best high quality binoculars here.

nikon monarch 5 8x42 review

If you are just starting your birdwatching or hunting career or have a low budget then the Monarch 5 is a good fit. Its features are sufficient and the price is right as well. There are reports of bad lens covers but that is a minor issue in our books.

Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 Review

Today’s article is a Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 review. Another binocular that is on our list of best cheap binoculars. The Monarch 5 series from Nikon covers the low-mid price range and is quite suitable for birdwatching and hunting activities. As opposed to its 8×42 counterpart, this one offers bigger zoom levels at 10x. Thus, we find this model to be better suited for hunters.

As most binoculars in the low to medium price range, the Monarch 5 offers a wide array of features for a reasonable price. It doesn’t pack the biggest punch but it’s enough for hobbyists. If you want to take a look at the more high-end models then check out our best high quality binoculars list here. Otherwise, enjoy our full Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 review!

Technical specifications

Nikon Monarch 5 10x42 ReviewThe 10×42 model Monarch 5 is rather similar to its counterpart in regard to features. Here are the ones we found most important:

The main difference is of course the level of zoom. The Monarch 5 10×42 comes with 10x zoom capabilities and it delivers well. The higher zoom level comes handy if you need to look at a smaller area rather than the big picture. This is especially handy when you are hunting.

The binoculars are built with Nikon’s premium ED glass. These lenses deliver a sharp image that is clear and the 42mm lens size helps with low-light conditions. The 42mm lenses are of course multicoated for glare optimization. Hunting often happens in dim conditions and Nikon has found a viable solution for the problem with these lenses.

Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 also features some nice touches for comfort. The binoculars have comfortable rubber eyecups and slide-down lens covers. The latter are especially nice as lens covers usually dangle in the way or get lost altogether.

The Monarch 5 is waterproof and fog proof as well. As we always say, wildlife isn’t afraid of the weather. These extras help us cope with the conditions and remain active. Foggy nights in the forest aren’t are worry with these binoculars!

This is not the lightest set around, weighing in at 2 pounds. However, if you’re looking for high zoom levels and quality, weight is something that you must accept.

How good are the binoculars?

We found the Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 to be a great set of binoculars. Regardless of being a 10x binocular, the Nikon provides a wide field of view and is relatively compact compared to competitors.

The image is crisp and clear and color reproduction is spot on. We found that the focus distance is also nice on these as it stays in focus at close distances as well. Overall, the optics is near perfect for this price range.

As with the 8×42, we did find the lens covers to be a bit wobbly. Another note would be that the case felt a little cheap and the binoculars lacked a belt strap.

nikon monarch 5 10x42 review

Other than this slight issue, we were happy with the performance. The case it comes in is neat and offers good protection. We also tested the waterproof feature of the binoculars and can’t report any issues. The OutdoorGearPal team took it birdwatching and we saw quite a few birds!

Customer feedback

Customers deem the product worthy of a high rating. 79% 5 star ratings on Amazon is usually a sign of a good product. The positive feedback is quite similar to our own. Good things are being said about the optics, focus distance and color quality. Performance in low-light situations is also considered good.

On the negative side there are a few comments about the lens covers. It really seems to be a design flaw of the 5 series.

Wrapping up the Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 review

The Nikon Monarch 5 10×42 is a nice addition to the low-mid price range of binoculars. Nikon’s proven technology in lens and glass production is all there and the results are nice. Colors are beautiful and the image is nice and sharp.

nikon monarch 5 10x42 review

It does have some quality issues with the lens covers so you should take that into account when buying. However, these binoculars should suit your needs for both hunting and birdwatching if you are on a budget. We would recommend these if you’re looking for a 10x Nikon.

Nikon Laserforce Review

The Nikon 16212 Laserforce rangefinding binoculars are not normal binoculars, in case you don’t know. These are rangefinding binoculars: binoculars with the normal function of a binocular as well as the technology of measuring the distance between you and a target (as for here, it is 10-1900-yard range). The target is usually the sport and rangefinding binoculars are usually aids for hunting. Check out our Nikon Laserforce review and you will learn more about why this is the hunting companion you need, and what got it on the list of best high quality binoculars.

Nikon Laserforce Review – Technical specifications

nikon laserforce reviewThe Laserforce comes with incline/decline technology (ID). It also has single or continuous measurements for up to eight seconds.

Up until a hundred yards, you can move in .1-yard increments. After 100, you can move in 1-yard increments all the way up to 1900 yards.

The display is something that attracts attention. It is a red OLED display coming in 4-step intensity adjustments for changing conditions. The display is very bright and clear. In a rangefinder binocular, the displays are really very important, whether users see it that way or not. The Nikon Laserforce is equipped with a brilliant display for the same reason.

The Laserforce measures in yards as well as meters, so you won’t face any problem if you prefer the readings in meters instead of yards.

Great warranty, light weight, easy to carry around, and accurate up to a long range – what else do you need? If you love hunting, then this is the product you should go for because there is rarely something better than this, especially in this price range.

How good are the binoculars?

Essentially, the Laserforce is a mix of great binocular expertise from Nikon and the extreme ranging and fast technology for up to 1900-yards. This 10×42 rangefinder binocular is a great addition to your hunting gear.

The optics are just perfect, for the lack of a better term.

nikon laserforce review

The lens is extremely clear and helpful in low-light. You won’t miss another deer or coyote ever again, no matter what the distance – 500 or 1500 yards. Many times, evenings cause a lot of problems. Early mornings too. Forget those problems with the Nikon Laserforce.

Customer feedback

As a rangefinding binocular, the Nikon Laserforce is quite popular among people who use hunting equipment on a regular basis. Laserforce might not be the best, but it’s loved very much.

Customers prefer a binocular and rangefinder combo that can deliver exceptional accuracy even up to long ranges. You will find that when you use the Nikon 16212 Laserforce, rangefinding becomes very easier. It’s mostly thanks to the clear vision. And hunting experts love it for that reason the most.

Wrapping up the Nikon Laserforce review

Out of the whole pool of rangefinding binoculars in this price range, the Nikon Laserforce is something that stands out. There are many reasons for that. Some you already know by reading this and some you will find out upon use, like how good it feels and how well the controls work.

nikon laserforce review

The Laserforce is a perfect blend of great accuracy, efficiency, and style. It’s going to be your best hunting partner if you give it enough time. Those who buy it often recommend it to their friends and come back to purchase another if they ever need one.

One more thing before we end. Just because it is primarily a rangefinding equipment, don’t think that it fails in its normal binocular capabilities. As a binocular, it might not be as powerful as similarly priced dedicated binoculars but it gets the job done and it gets it done fairly well.

Nikon Monarch 7 10×42 Review

The Nikon 7549 Monarch 7 10×42 is one of the higher-end binoculars. Commonly called the Nikon Monarch, this pair of 10×42 binoculars is a great addition to your outdoors kit. Why? Let’s find that out in our Nikon Monarch 7 10×42 review.

nikon monarch 7 10x42 review

However, one more thing before you move along.

You need to know that there are multiple product lines from Nikon itself. There are other brands who manufacture quality binoculars too. All in all, there is a lot to choose from. And incidentally, there are price ranges. If this price range is not suitable for you, you can always move downwards and choose another product from the same line. They will have many similarities. If you want something else, though, feel free to take a look at our list of best high quality binoculars.

nikon monarch 7 10x42Technical specifications

The field of view is exceptionally wide. It makes spotting the subject far easier. And not only that, once you have found the subject, you can be sure that it will be as lifelike as possible. The lenses are really good quality, as one would expect from Nikon. Monarch 10×42 employs lenses that give perfect clarity and colors.

As with many other Nikon binoculars, there is a rubber armoring on the body. This helps in two ways: first it makes it absorb most of impact resistance, so if you drop it somewhere, you have nothing to worry about; and on the other hand, it gives you the perfect grip, even if your palms or the binocular body is wet.

With the dielectric high-reflective coatings (multilayer prism coating), you can be sure that the color reproduction is going to be perfect. Further, these high-quality prisms also mean that the contrast in what you see is significantly better than normal binocular sight.

Along with amazing magnification and field of view qualities, the Monarch also steals the show in the weight category. The binoculars are really light for the features they have.

How good are the binoculars?

Really good.

So good that we believe these are the best birding binoculars on the market right now in this price range as well as many further price ranges. The quality is so good that sometimes you actually feel you’re seeing something better than it originally is (but again that’s only happening because you’re zoomed-in on the subject from a very long distance).

Customer feedback

With 92% 5- and 4-star ratings, this product is something you can’t say no to. The Nikon 7549 Monarch 7 10×42 is a heart-stopper on so many levels. It looks good, feels good, and functions brilliantly. Better contrast and color reproduction means you see what really is out there. Wider field of view means you can spot your subject easier. Rubber armoring means the grip is good, as well as you have nothing to worry about if you drop it from a little height.

Wrapping up the Nikon Monarch 7 10×42 review

Nikon 7549 Monarch 7 10×42 is an Amazon’s Choice product. It is always in good demand, both online and offline. There is a combination of multiple factors that makes the Monarch so good. You see, it is not just about the magnification or the clarity of vision. It is equally about other things. So, taken together, what matters is the overall experience that the binoculars give. And the Nikon Monarch 7 10×42 is a product that provides an excellent overall experience in any outdoor activity, may that be birding, hunting, or just savoring the delights of wildlife or sceneries. Further, it is also good-looking while being rugged enough to withstand slightly harsh conditions and drops from mid heights. The price is high, yes. But that’s the price you pay if you want premium.

Nikon Prostaff 7S 8×42 Review

The Nikon Prostaff 7s 8×42 is one of the best-selling pair of binoculars out on the market. It is also Amazon’s Choice on Laced with amazing features and a great viewing experience, the 7s 8×42 is the standard size for people who want an astounding experience. In our Nikon Prostaff 7s 8×42 review, we will be mostly focusing on the good and the bad, leaving aside the less important details, and you’ll see why we just had to put it on our list of best high quality binoculars.

nikon prostaff 7s 8x42 review

Before we proceed, know that there are four sizes in this line, 10×30, 10×40, 8×30, and this one, 8×42. Which is the most ideal? Well, that depends on multiple things. All we can say for now is that the 8×42 is one of the best-selling ones and there is a logical reason behind that.

nikon prostaff 7s 8x42Technical specifications

Weighing only around 650 grams, the 7s 8×42 is very easy to hold and move around.

The Nikon Prostaff 7s 8×42 includes high reflection prisms. These are mirror-coated. The brightness, therefore, is greater than what you would expect. This comes in handy when you are doing outdoor activities like watching wildlife, experience scenery, or even hunting.

Correcting the eye position is a nightmare in many binoculars. Not the case in the Prostaff 7s 8×42. The 7s 8×42 comes with turn-and-slide rubber eyecups. These eyecups have a multi-click adjustment mechanism. Basically, what it does is allow you to better position the eye through the eyepiece of the binoculars.

There is rubber armoring on the binoculars. What that does is protect the binoculars from shock and accidental drops. Besides resistance, it also proves to be a good aid in holding the binoculars. The rubber armor is surely very comfortable and makes an amazing grip material.

The binoculars are waterproof up to 3.3 ft. or 1m for 10 minutes.

Last but not the least, the pair of binoculars has a long eye relief design. People who wear eyeglasses won’t have any problems in looking through the 7s 8×42 at all. It also ensures that the watcher has a particularly good field of view.

How good are the binoculars?

The viewing is undoubtedly exceptional. We had this expectation, so there were no surprises. The brightness and clarity are both perfect. The world looks rightfully colorful as well.

When you use these binoculars to watch the wildlife, you will find that there are no problems and the sight is actually better than most other binoculars in this price range. It is something you have to see for yourself.

Customer feedback

The Nikon Prostaff 7s 8×42 is a product that thousands of consumers love all over the globe. With 87% five-star ratings and 9% 4-star, there’s not much left for the negative section. So, what do the customers love? Well, first of all, Nikon has designed these binoculars keeping in mind not only the needs but the latent needs of the people as well. For example, when you are in jungle, you don’t want a lot of dust and scratches on the body of your binoculars. They counter this with an “armoring” that protects the product. Then, splashes are quite common and the binoculars are, therefore, waterproof to some degree.

The clarity of view and the comfort of carrying it around (along with the grip) make the 7s 8×42 a perfect companion for most of the customers, who are highly likely to buy another pair.
